Bras are fickle creatures. They may provide necessary support, but figuring out how to wear one comfortably is such a chore that many women dream of ditching them forever.

Take it from the experts, though: bras don’t have to be the bane of your existence. Today, we’ll talk about four common issues you might encounter while wearing a bra and what you can do to make yourself more comfortable.

1. The Straps Won’t Stay Up

You shouldn’t have to keep pulling your bra straps up all day. Instead:

  • Adjust the straps. Sometimes it’s really that simple! Pull the straps through the adjustment sliders until they sit securely on your shoulders. They should feel taut but not tight.
  • Make sure the band is sitting straight across your back. It’ll provide extra support and keep the straps level with each other, making them less likely to slip down.
  • Try a racerback bra. The straps on these bras cross over each other at the back, keeping them from slipping down. You can buy bras that come ready-made with racerback straps or use a strap clip to temporarily convert a standard bra to this style.
  • If your bra is old, consider replacing it with a new one. Bra straps are made of elastic material that stretches out over time. Straps that are past their prime may not have the tension they need to stay in place.

2. The Cups Gape

Your bra’s cups should sit snugly against your breasts without much space between your skin and the fabric. If the cups on your bra are gaping, try:

  • Going down a size. A smaller bra may fit you better. This is especially true if you’ve lost weight recently and haven’t had a chance to update your unmentionables. Consider getting a professional bra fitting done to find the right size for you!
  • Choosing a different bra style. Some breast shapes just don’t play nice with standard bra cups. Padded bras, push-up bras, and sports bras are often better options for women with smaller or bottom-heavy breasts.

3. The Center Gore Won’t Stay Put

You know that little panel nestled between the cups of a bra? That’s the center gore. It should lie flat against your sternum when worn. If yours isn’t cooperating, you can:

  • Go up a cup size. Wearing a bra that’s too small for you forces your breast tissue to bunch up inside the cups, forcing the center gore away from your sternum. Going up a size gives the girls more room to breathe and lets the center gore rest comfortably against your chest.
  • Go down a band size. A band that’s too big won’t be tight enough to keep the center gore in place.

4. The Band Keeps Riding Up

If you just can’t seem to keep your bra band in place for more than an hour or two, it’s time for an adjustment.

  • Go down a band size. Larger bands tend to get pulled upward by your bra straps over the course of the day.
  • Loosen your bra straps. Too-tight straps can also pull the band up.
  • Go down a cup size. A bra that’s loose in the front creates extra slack at the band, making it harder for it to stay in place.
