Have you ever wondered how bras were made before molded cups were invented? With seams, of course!
Seamed bras are still around today, and we think they’re incredibly underrated. They may get a bad rap for showing through tighter-fitting clothes, but they offer a multitude of benefits you just don’t get from conventional molded bras. Keep reading to learn what sets these garments apart and why you might want to invest in one of your own.
What Are Seamed Bras?
Also called cut and sew bras, seamed bras are made by cutting and assembling pieces of sturdy fabric to form the piece’s cups. They usually have adjustable straps and hook and loop closures on the back.
That might not sound like a big deal, but trust us: it is. We’ll get into why in just a minute. In the meantime, it’s important to note that seamed bras and molded bras are technically not mutually exclusive. Some seamed bras have molded cups or half-cups hidden inside the stitched fabric for extra smoothing and padding. When we talk about molded bras here, though, we mean bras that rely on their molded cups for most of their structural function.
Benefits of Seamed Bras
So what makes seamed bras so special? Let’s get into it.
1. More Support
Molded bras can’t hold a candle to the kind of support you get from a good seamed bra. These pieces use at least three (sometimes four!) pieces of fabric to shape each cup: two on either side of each breast sewn together with a vertical seam, and another one on top sewn on with a horizontal seam. This gives them much more lifting power than your average foam cup bra, making them an especially great option for bustier ladies.
2. Enhanced Side Shaping
Many seamed bras have special side support panels stitched into them. These panels push your breast tissue away from your armpits and project it forward. You won’t get any unflattering bunching or rolling around the sides of your torso, and all of your breast tissue will be out front where it belongs.
3. More Natural Silhouette
The cups on seamed bras are shaped very differently than the ones on your standard T-shirt bra. The construction of each cup creates a rounded cone-like shape that more closely resembles the breast’s natural form. Combined with the enhanced support seamed bras offer, this leaves you with a showstopping silhouette that’s sure to turn heads.
4. High Customizability
Seamed bras can be made with much deeper cups than your standard bra, which makes them great for ladies with projected or bottom-heavy breasts. No more uncomfortable bras that don’t fit your natural breast shape!
Seamed bras also don’t have to stick to plain-Jane materials. They can be made of any fabric, including delicate ones like satin and lace. You’d be surprised how strong these seemingly flimsy textiles can be when they have skillful stitching to back them up.
